Taylor Swift Series: Fearless

While Fearless by Taylor Swift has already been re-recorded, I thought I would offer some major differences between the two albums and discuss some fan favorites from both albums. First off, Fearless was originally released in November of 2008 and featured 19 songs on the platinum version. Fearless (Taylor’s Version) was released in April of 2021 and featured 26 songs with 6 new songs. This new version featured songs with country stars, Marren Morris and Keith Urban.

The original version of Fearless features lyrics discussing adolescence, teenage romance, heartbreak, and familial love. Swift describes Fearless as “an album full of magic and curiosity, the bliss and devastation of youth. It was the diary of the adventures and explorations [of] a teenage girl who was learning tiny lessons with every new crack in the facade of the fairytale ending she'd been shown in the movies``. Some of her signature tracks feature her relationship with Joe Jonas such as Forever and Always and Mr. Perfectly Fine.

Both albums were extremely successful, but in somewhat different ways. The original was the best-selling album of 2009, most awarded country album, and won four Grammys including Album of the Year. This is what made the re-release of this album also equally successful. Fearless (Taylor’s Version) had the largest number of weekly streams for a country album by a female artist in the opening week. This album was also widely successful for the fans as the two most popular songs Love Story and You Belong With Me are fan favorites today.

Taylor and her 4 Grammys in 2009

Several songs on these albums have remained popular throughout the past ten years, with strong emphasis on the singles on the album. The singles on Fearless were Love Story, You Belong With Me, White Horse, Fifteen, and Fearless. Of these, the music videos for Love Story and You Belong With Me remain the most iconic in terms of her most well-known music videos. The singles for Taylor’s Version are similar with two extra singles: You All Over Me featuring Maren Morris and Mr. Perfectly Fine. Mr. Perfectly Fine was extremely successful primarily because it was a surprise release and it details her breakup with Joe Jonas.

Fearless (Taylor’s Version) features several fan favorites that have remained just as relevant to Taylor Swift fans as they were 10 years ago. These favorites include Love Story, White Horse, You Belong With Me, and Mr. Perfectly Fine. However, there are less well-known songs that I think are just as good, and even better. My personal favorites include Forever and Always, The Way I Loved You, and Change.

Taylor Swift experienced a massive amount of success due to Fearless and this resonated in her re-release. While I do not know all of the songs on this album, there are certain tracks that are my favorite songs by her. As her country tone started to fade in this album, it was still present in her next few albums. Onto Speak Now!
